Coldend

Responsible for moving the filament. The motor and gearbox work to guide the plastic through a PTFE tube, or directly into the hot part. There are different types of cold ends that have a slightly different principle of operation, and we will look at them a bit later.

Hotend

Heats and melts the filament layer by layer through a nozzle. The two main components here are: a heater that heats and melts the thread, and a special nozzle that directs the plastic during its extrusion.

Direct

The monofilament is fed to the heating part in one piece, meaning the drive and gear that move the material along are located directly near the hot end. Thus, extrusion can happen very quickly because the feed distance is small, so the probability of problems during extrusion is lower.

Bowden

Here the hot and cold ends are separated by a PTFE tube through which the plastic monofilament passes. The Bowden extruder is slower due to the longer path of the rod, but with its help, you can print high-quality models. Note: the Bowden extruder is not suitable for making models from TPU and elastomers.

Dual

Found on the equipment of some 3D printers. The main feature is the ability to print with several materials simultaneously or sequentially. Dual extrusion allows you to speed up the work process since there are two tools for moving, melting, and pushing.
