3D Printer Plates — Something for Every Taste
The 3D printer bed is one of the most critical components. Its primary function is to provide a flat and smooth surface to which the first layer of filament will reliably adhere during printing. Today, there are a huge number of bed options, all with different functions, sizes, and other characteristics. In this article, we will look at which magnetic printer mat to choose so that it satisfies your tasks as a 3D maker.
Coating Selection
Glass
The most common mat material for budget printers. Most glass surfaces are made of tempered glass with a carborundum coating, which prevents deformation during the printing process. It is worth noting that the glass overlay will have to be attached with special clips, as it is not magnetic and does not have additional mounting.
Smooth PEI Spring Steel Surface
This is a relatively new but already quite popular solution. The material is flexible and contains magnets, making it easy to attach and remove from the equipment. Flexibility is one of the greatest advantages, as it allows for removing finished parts with a simple bend. PEI also features excellent adhesion with most filaments, including PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, etc.
Textured Steel PEI Plate
It has the same advantages as the previous option, but you can see various textures that are reflected on the printed parts. By the way, the texture helps to remove finished models even more easily.
G10 Printer Build Plate
Not as well known as the previous examples, but features excellent characteristics. This plastic is similar to carbon fiber; it is stiff and very strong, so you won't have to worry about accidental surface damage.
Polypropylene or PP
This is a translucent plastic. It is semi-flexible, so it bends slightly for easier model removal. Polypropylene can withstand temperatures up to 120°C, but it is very easy to accidentally damage, and every scratch will show on your print.
PEO Film
Used in pair with PEI. It is applied more for aesthetics, as it demonstrates a holographic pattern resembling hexagons. They create a shiny and attractive base on the printed parts.
PEY Film
Demonstrates a pattern of stars and dots that will shine brightly. Different colors will be reflected at different angles and copied onto the bottom of your manufactured parts.
H1H and H5H
This is a film with holographic geometry, specifically with straight long lines or intersecting ones. It is resistant to high temperatures of 200°C.
PET 3D Printer Plate
Visually resembles carbon fiber, providing distinct visual appeal. It withstands up to 120°C and works best with PLA plastic.
