Polymaker PLA-CF: Carbon Fiber Filament for Engineering Models
Polymaker PLA-CF is a carbon fiber reinforced PLA filament. The material is roughly 25% stronger than standard PLA while remaining just as user-friendly — even beginners can master it easily. Finished products feature a matte surface with no visible layers, making PLA-CF a frequent choice for engineering models where both performance and aesthetics are crucial. Be sure to read to the end for important printing tips.
Key Material Features
Carbon fiber makes up 8% of the total filament composition — it is what strengthens the plastic and ensures excellent interlayer adhesion, making products resistant to delamination. After printing, the surface appears incredibly smooth and matte, with layers being virtually invisible.
Low shrinkage and resistance to warping during the printing process allow for consistent dimensional accuracy. Furthermore, smooth and stable extrusion means the nozzle does not clog, keeping printer maintenance after a session to a minimum.
Important Tips for 3D Makers
- Use a hardened steel nozzle. Carbon fiber is an abrasive material and quickly wears out standard brass nozzles — a steel nozzle is a must for quality results.
- Dry the filament before printing. The recommended drying temperature is 55°C for 8 hours. This ensures stable feeding and minimal defects.
- Clean the extruder after printing. After finishing a session, check the extruder for plastic residue and perform a cleaning before switching to another filament type.
