LW-PLA Filament for 3D Printing: Lightweight Without Loss of Strength
LW-PLA (Light Weight PLA) is a lightweight PLA plastic with foaming properties, used where the part's weight is a critical parameter. Model aircraft, drone frames, aerodynamic elements — all of these can be printed lighter and strong at the same time. The material comes with active or passive foaming, and printer settings and the work approach depend significantly on this choice.
Active Foaming
When heated, the filament begins to expand and, at its peak, increases in volume by more than double — this allows for parts with extremely low density and significantly less weight. The foaming level, density, and speed can be adjusted via temperature and other printing parameters. It is worth noting that the specific weight reduction percentage depends on the manufacturer, filament humidity, nozzle type, and printer settings. Changing the flow also affects the color: a lower flow results in a more matte surface, while a higher flow provides a brighter and more saturated shade.
Passive Foaming
A rarer variant of LW-PLA, where the plastic is already pre-foamed. During extrusion, only slight additional foaming occurs — approximately 5–10%. Finished parts are also lighter than standard PLA, and the material itself is easier to work with: printing parameters are almost identical to regular PLA. Interestingly, a lower printing temperature yields better surface quality and a matte texture with high detail, but a slightly higher product mass.
LW-PLA Applications
The most common application is printing model aircraft, aerodynamic wings, and fuselages. LW-PLA is also used to manufacture housings for electronic components of drones and ultra-lightweight crash protection for aircraft.
