Magigoo Metal: Adhesive for 3D Printing with Metal Filaments

BASF Ultrafuse 316L is a special material for FDM printing that allows for the production of solid stainless steel parts on a conventional desktop 3D printer. What is BASF Ultrafuse 316L?

The monofilament consists of highly refined metal particles embedded in thermoplastic binders: 90% metal powder is encased in a polymer binder, allowing it to be shaped into a fiber. This composition enables safe handling of the material, avoiding the risks associated with fine powder found in other additive manufacturing methods.

Thanks to the sintering process, finished parts can be used in many fields: functional prototyping, medical equipment, automotive parts, tooling, and mold inserts with conformal cooling, among others.

 

Printing Tips

  1. Build plate temperature. The build plate should be heated to 90–110°C depending on the printer type — this ensures printing stability with a minimal risk of warping.
  2. Apply a thin layer. Magigoo Metal should be applied in an even, thin layer onto a clean build plate surface.
  3. Removing parts — with water. Once printing is complete, submerge the build plate in water and wait from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the part size. If submersion is not possible, moisten the product with water around the perimeter.
  4. Hardened steel nozzle. Metal filament is abrasive, so a standard brass nozzle will wear out quickly. Use hardened steel nozzles — they can handle the load and will last much longer.
  5. Closed enclosure and low airflow. A printer with a closed body and minimal internal air circulation helps avoid sudden temperature fluctuations, which increase the products' tendency to warp.
