Support Filament for 3D Printing: How to Choose Material for Supports
Support filament is a filament for printing supports, essential when working with complex geometry, overhangs, and unusual shapes. The right choice of support material directly affects the surface quality of the finished model and the complexity of post-processing. There are two main approaches: soluble supports and those that are removed mechanically.
Soluble Support Materials
Soluble filaments dissolve completely or partially in water or chemical solutions after printing is complete. The most popular is PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), which is perfectly compatible with PLA and safely dissolves in ordinary water. For ABS, HIPS is often used, which dissolves in limonene — natural solvents based on citrus oil. Soluble supports are especially indispensable where mechanical removal could damage the product or is simply impossible: they ensure clean, smooth surfaces without marks or defects.
Mechanical Removal of Supports
Materials for mechanical removal have low adhesion to the main part — thanks to this, the supports are easily separated by hand after printing. Most often, this is the same type of plastic as the main model but with properties that minimize interlayer bonding. Supports are printed in the form of a grid or sparse structure for easier removal. This approach is simple and requires no chemical procedures, but it is not suitable for all types of models.
How to Select Support Filament
The choice depends on the material of the main model, the part's geometry, and your printer's capabilities. Print settings also play an important role: the thickness, density, and structure of the supports must match the complexity of the model.
